Born at Terijoki parish, Finland. After World War II, Terijoki was ceded to the Soviet Union as part of the Moscow Peace Treaty. Its original Finnish population was expelled and was relocated close to Helsinki. Soviet citizens were relocated to Terijoki and it was renamed Zelenogorsk.
World War II veteran: enlisted in the U.S. Army 16 July 1942 at Cleveland, Ohio. He served until 29 November 1945.
