David Plummer married Mary Elizabeth Weatherwax 3 March, 1864 at St. Joseph Co., MI. He had just enlisted in Co. K of the 12th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. The unit was mustered in on 29 February, 1864 and was scheduled to leave for duty almost immediately thereafter. Fortunately, David had a tintype taken before he left. The following August, he became ill in camp, died at Little Rock on the 12th and was buried the same day. He may not have known that his wife was expecting their child. David and Mary Elizabeth's daughter, Nellie Frances Plummer, was born 28 November, 1864 at St. Joseph Co., MI. The portrait of David shown here is a restoration of the image from the now badly detriorated tintype that he gave his wife before he left St. Joseph Co. It is thought to be his only surviving image.
