Miss Thelma Lou Cook, affectionately referred to by her parents as "Rami," of Columbus, GA, passed Friday, January 20, 2017 at Orchard View Nursing Facility in Columbus. Miss Cook was born in Columbus, GA, the only child of the late Douglas and Annie Will Porter Cook. Baptized at an early age, she became a member of Greater Shady Grove Baptist church where she was a Sunday School Teacher. Over the years, she attended Fourth Street Baptist Church and St. Luke Baptist Church. She joined Pinehurst Baptist Church and later became a member of Rosehill Baptist Church on Hamilton Road. At an early age, she worked at her father's cafe, "Cook's Blue Front," on 8th Avenue. Her uncle, Meredith Cook, owned Columbus' "Club Lavana." She was a graduate of Wm. H. Spencer High School and attended Alabama State College in Montgomery, AL. In 1982 Thelma retried as a teacher from the Columbus Training Center for Special Needs Children. Thelma had a million dollar smile. She loved working with children and never met a stranger. At Roosevelt Rehabilitation Center in Warm Springs, GA she won an award for being the Most Talkative and Friendly Person. At Azalea Trace Nursing Facility, Miss Cook did volunteer work while residing there.

Thelma is survived by her cousins: O.D. Porter of Pittsview, AL, Violet Porter of Pittsview, Burke Murphy of Columbus, GA, Minnie Lee Porter of Jamaica Plains, NY Belita Stafford Walker of Columbus, Billy Porter of Columbus, Loretta Lee Jackson of Shiloh, GA, Godfrey Lee, Gloria Maddox, Douglas Lee, Deprimethon Lee, Angela Stewrat, Andre Lee and Laneele Cook and a host of friends who were like family to her including: Lorrie and Jack Kasych, Susan and Jack Williams, Agnes Evans, Katie and George Terry, Debra Pickney, Bonnie Dunlap, James Johnson, Bessie Biggers, Dorothy Shelton, Rick Rigsby, Lynn Watkins, Cliff Rutledge, Gimearl Walker, Valerie Willis, Levi Porter, Pat Davis, Fay Sherell, Doris and Kathy Carde, Elizabeth Lacour, Eva Smith, Jackie and Melvin Moore, Beverly Hammonds and Katrina Chester. Funeral services: 11AM, Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Sconiers Funeral Home Chapel; Burial: Evergreen Memorial Park.
