Delbert was born Aug 12 1924 in Johnston City ILL. He died in his home from bone cancer Dec 31 1994 with family around him. Delbert was inducted into the army during WWII on June 12 1943. His unit was the 36 Infantry division out of TX. He trained at Fort McClellan AL. He fought in the battles of Naples, Foggia, Angio and Rome the Arno Campaigns.He earned the medal of Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters, 3 Bronze Stars, Sharpshooter, Infantry Combat Badge and the Good Conduct medal. He was shot twice, both times in the leg. When he was shot he was taken to the 38 General Hospital, where he then became a ambulance driver. He was discharged on Dec 7 1945. He married Phyllis Kirkpatrick on July 18 1947. She was born July 22 2928. They worked at the Methodist children home in Mt. Vernon as house parents. They then bought the Standard Gas Station in Christopher. He later became a miner at old been 21 and they built a house next to his parents. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a Mason. Anyone who knew him loved him.
