Christopher Progress, Christopher, Illinois, Thursday, April 23, 1936, Front page, Col. 5: Christopher Girl Dies of Spinal Meningitis. Ruby Kirkpatrick died at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Harley Kirkpatrick, last Saturday afternoon about 12:30. The cause of her death was attributed by two of the attending physicians as spinal meningitis. Death came after an illness of only a few hours. She was taken seriously ill only the night before she died. Funeral services were held from the parlor of the Union Undertakers, Sunday afternoon. Interment was made in the Mulkeytown cemetery.
The doctors thought the family might be contagious so wouldn't let any of them attend Ruby's funeral. Afterwards they realized Ruby had died from an appendicitis. Ruby's family was furious about missing her funeral.
