WYOMING - A 21-year-old Wyoming woman who died in a house fire Monday was later called "a hero" for saving the life of her 12-day-old infant.

The fire at 900 N. Galena Ave. was reported with a 911 call at 10:36 a.m., and fire departments from Wyoming, Toulon, and Akron-Princeville responded, according to a news release from the Stark County Sheriff's Office.

The house was engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived, but the baby was found outside the house because of the mother's efforts to save the child, according to Sheriff Steve Sloan.

"The victim was a hero as she put her baby into a car seat and dropped the baby to the ground from the upstairs window," Sloan said in the release.

The baby was taken by Stark County Ambulance to OSF St. Luke Medical Center in Kewanee and then transferred to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. No further information about the child was immediately available.

The mother, who was found inside the house, was pronounced dead at 1:02 p.m.
