On the 1850 census, Maria Goodell, daughter of his sister Sarah Brown Goodell, is recorded either living with him and his wife Catharine or merely visiting on that particular day. They lived in Liverpool Township, Fulton County, Illinois.

While living in Licking County, Ohio, on December 2, 1828, he married Catharine Inglehart. In 1830, he and Catharine were living in McKean Township, Licking County. They had at least one daughter, Angeline, born in 1849 in Illinois.

In his younger days, he was a teacher. Listed as a laborer on Fulton County Home, Almshouse Register. Lyman and Mrs. Brown were admitted to the almshouse on Sept. 1, 1877. He was recorded as having cancer in an eye. He died there on April 7, 1880. Mrs. Brown had worked as a housekeeper.

He is listed on an 1880 mortality schedule, having died in April. His last residence was Buckheart Township, Fulton County.
