Note: There is no extant grave marker for Joshua. He lived in the western part of Haverhill that became Methuen in 1726, and he died there, and there is little doubt that he and his wife are buried there as well.

Joshua was the son of Michael Emerson and Hannah Webster of Haverhill, Mass. He m. Haverhill 2 July 1706 Mary CLARK, the daughter of Haniel Clark and Mary Gutterson. Joshua was called of Methuen in his will, dated 29 May 1742, and proved 19 July 1742, naming wife Mary and children. These dates strongly suggest that he died in June 1742. Children, all b. Haverhill:

* Isaac (twin), b. and d. Haverhill 29 Jan 1706/7

* Jacob (twin), b. and d. Haverhill 29 Jan 1706/7

* Micha (sometimes Michael), b. 7 Dec 1707, d. Haverhill 7 Nov 1770, m. Haverhill 4 Nov 1729 Katherine MORRILL, b. 1701, d. Haverhill Jan 1802, aged 100 years, the daughter of Jacob Morrill and Susanna Whittier. Micha and Katherine had six children born in Haverhill from 1730 to 1742.

* Joshua, b. 24 March 1708/9, (d. Methuen 11 June 1796?), m. (1) (Methuen 13 Dec 1733?) Sarah BAILEY, b. say 1713, (d. Methuen July 1757?); m. (2) Haverhill 17 Nov 1757 Mary CHASE, b. Haverhill 3 July 1726, (d. 1780?), daughter of Abner Chase and Elizabeth Whittier. Joshua had five children born 1735 to 1745 with first wife, Sarah, and five more children, born 1758 to c. 1768 with second wife, Mary. The source of the death dates for Joshua and both wives, and that of his first marriage date are all unknown; none of these are found in the published vital records, but were found in web accounts.

* Josiah, b. Haverhill 1 Dec 1710, d. Methuen 8 May 1801, m. Haverhill 2 July 1706 Abigail MESSER.

* Hananiel, b. 29 May 1712, d. Newbury 7 Dec 1776, m. Bradford, Mass. 12 Oct 1736 Patience HARDY, b. Bradford 20 Jan 1716 [/17?], d. Newbury 18 July 1762 (but only called "wife of Hananiel" without her name), the daughter of Thomas and Rose Hardy of Bradford. Hananiel and Patience had five children born from 1738 to 1752, and perhaps others. Hananiel has an extant grave marker in the Sawyer Hill Cemetery in Newbury.

* Mary, b. 11 April 1714

* Sarah, b. 22 April 1716, m. Methuen 6 Oct 1737 Marston STEVENS. Sarah was called Sarah Stevens in the 1742 will of her father. There is no record of children in Methuen, and no other records for Marston have been located.

* Reuben, baptized Haverhill 24 April 1720, m. (1) Methuen 7 April 1746 Sarah COLBURN (also Coburn; called "Sary" in b. record), b. Dracut 4 Nov 1719, d. c. 1766, the daughter of John Colburn Jr. and Sarah Richardson of Dracut. Reuben m. (2) Haverhill 24 March 1767 (however, record of intention in Methuen 5 March 1768) Anna GAGE, b. Bradford 5 April 1741, a twin daughter of Joseph and Anna Gage of Bradford. Reuben had three known children with first wife, Sarah, born 1746 to 1753 in Haverhill and Methuen.

* William, b. 1 April 1722, d. 14 Feb 1782, m. Methuen 14 July 1746 Abigail PATTEE, b. Haverhill 29 March 1725, d. 22 March 1804, the daughter of Richard Pattee and Susanna Beale of Haverhill. The death dates for William and Abigail are not found in any published vital record, and come from the 1983 work, The Haverhill Emersons, by Jane Emerson James. William and Abigail had nine children, born 1748 to 1764 in Methuen.
