John served as a private with the 28th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company E (Civil War). He fought at Antietam on September 17, 1862, and was wounded in the right arm. He was taken prisoner at Chancellorsville, but he participated in the campaign from Savannah to Goldsboro.
