Robert W. Klawitter, 88, of 2225 Coates St., laid down the working tools of life Thursday, April 17, 2008, at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Masonic Temple, 1155 Locust St., with a funeral luncheon immediately following services. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at the temple, where there will be a Masonic memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Thursday at the temple. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on April 21, 1919, in La Crosse, Wis., son of William Carl and Louise Rosine (Manske) Klawitter. He married Eileen Ruby Hillis on Feb. 9, 1952, at Grandview United Methodist Church in Dubuque; she preceded him in death. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Roberta Lee Gaines, William Charles Klawitter, and Robert John Klawitter.

He attended La Crosse Central High School and the University of Minnesota. During World War II, he worked as a draftsman for Boeing in Seattle and Consolidated Steel in Long Beach, Calif. He settled in Dubuque in 1946, and joined John Deere Dubuque Works. Robert worked at John Deere for more than 34 years in the methods department and in other engineering capacities.

He was a member of Grand View United Methodist Church for 57 years. Robert began his Masonic affiliation with the Order of De Molay in La Crosse, and has been an active Mason in Dubuque for more than 50 years. He was a member and past master of Mosaic Lodge 125; member of Metropolitan Lodge 49, Dubuque Lodge 3, Tri-State Morning Lodge 673, Clinton Scottish Rite, Dubuque York Rite and Julien Chapter OES; and member and past president of Dubuque High Twelve.

Surviving are his children, Roberta Lee (Paul) Gaines, of Charlotte, N.C., William Charles (Gina) Klawitter, of Denver, and their daughter, Eileen Jane, and Robert John (Susan) Klawitter, of Arlington Heights, Ill., and their children, Eric Lee and Jenna Marie; and a niece, Janet Lata, of Pueblo, Colo.

He also was preceded in death by his brother, Harry; and his parents.
