Service Thursday For Rev. Monnes
Funeral service for Rev. Erling Monnes, 72, retired Baptist minister who died Sunday, will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Community Baptist church, where he was pastor for eight years until his retirement in 1956. Interment will be at Riverview Abbey. Mr. Monnes, who resided at Aloha, was born in Vardalen, Norway, July 22, 1885. He came to the United States at the age of 17 and attended the University of Chicago, receiving his bachelor of philosophy degree from the divinity school there in 1914.
Kelso Pastorate Held
Prior to coming to Oregon he was pastor of the First Baptist Church, Kelso, for 10 years. Since his retirement from the Aloha church, he has served as interim pastor of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and the Eastside Baptist Church.
In 1953 he received the Rosa Orline Hall Award for Distinguished Service to Town and Country Baptist Churches, an honor bestowed by the American Baptist Convention. He married Miss Myrtle Finwall in June 1914, and she died in 1939. They had two sons, Bernard J. and Willard F. In February 1942, he married Eunice Hartmus of Longview. She survives, as do the two sons, five grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Walborg Bakken, Cleveland, Ohio.
He was a member of Kelso Lodge No. 94, AF&AM, and Beaver Chapter No. 106, OES, Beaverton. The family has suggested that any remembrances be in the form of donations to the Linfield College student loan fund for the assistance of a divinity student and can be mailed in care of Mrs. Monnes at 3380 SW 178th Ave., Aloha.
