Catherine Mae Allan
(1918 - 2017)
Catherine Thomas Allan passed into her new life February 5, 2017 at age 98. She was born in Falfurrias, Texas in 1918 to John and Annie Mae Thomas as part of the pioneer Thomas family. Catherine graduated from Falfurrias High School as Salutatorian in 1935. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas and graduated from Draughn Business College in San Antonio, Texas. She returned to Falfurrias and was employed by the Falfurrias branch of the US Department of Agriculture. She married Robert Allan, a teacher in the Falfurrias School System. Robert later had a position with The Texas Education Agency and served as principal and Superintendent in other Texas locations; they lived in Combs, Premont, Cuero , Ganado and San Benito. Their last move was to Austin. After Robert's death in 1987, Catherine lived on in her home for almost 30 years before moving to a residence in Sugar Land. Catherine is survived by daughters Betty Alley (Eddy) of Sugar Land and Mary Craig of Ft Worth, three grand daughters: Kimberly Kool (Loren), Jana Milam (Jason), Melissa Harrison (Wayne), one grandson, David Craig Massad (George) of Ft Worth and six great grand daughters. Also sister Lucille Thomas Kruse of Kingsville, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, a young brother, Henry Thomas and an older brother John Thomas Jr., husband Robert Allan and daughter Beverly Allan. Catherine lived her life with faith, grace, kindness and a contagious sense of humor. There was a calm and peaceful aura in her presence – never hurried. Her home was a colorful garden with the African violets that flourished in her nurturing care. Her delicious cooking was memorable – her recipes were collectables. As a very young lady, her angel food cakes were legendary. She whipped the egg whites with a wire whisk in a large platter! Catherine spent over 20 years caring for her twin daughter Beverly who was confined to a wheelchair with rheumatoid arthritis – always keeping her cheerful and hopeful – encouraging her through school to graduate salutatorian, graduate from Texas University in Austin and then earn a Master's degree in Latin with a minor in French. Catherine was a Longhorn football fan that rarely missed a televised game. But there also was the Baylor Bears since seven in her family had Baylor degrees. As her body became frail, her vision dim and her hearing dull, her mind stayed sharp and her memory clear. She kept a keen interest in happenings in the world and formed strong opinions along the way. Her faith sustained her throughout her lifetime. The devotion and loving care from her family reflected the devotion and admiration they felt and that she had fostered in them. A Graveside Service was held on Thursday February 9, 2017 with son –in – law Reverend Eddy Alley officiating. Howard Williams Funeral Home of Falfurrias was in charge of arrangements. Internment was in The Falfurrias Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to South Texas Children's Home in Beeville, Samaritan's Purse, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or Charity of choice. .
