April 4, 1946 - February 7, 2017

Sturgis | Shirley Kay Lannen (Odell) passed away February 7, 2017 at home, surrounded by her most cherished gifts, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her best friend of 40 years, "R.M". Together he and Shirley molded a beautiful, cherished family.

Shirley was born April 4, 1946 to Jim and Bonita Odell in the small, quiet town of Ekalaka, Montana. The 2nd youngest of five, she grew up attending school in a one room school house with her siblings John, David, Richard, and Janet. She met and married Wayne Lannen in the late 60's. Through this marriage she was blessed with two children. "C" came whirling in first and she was the apple of their eye. A year and 11 months later, on Valentine's Day, Colleen would have to learn to share her mom and dad with a brother, "M". The two would spend many a day, right up to her death, arguing over who's mom she was. Her marriage was cut short 5 years following the birth of Mike. Wayne passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack in November 1975.

In 1976 Shirley met "R". They fell in love and would soon become a family. In 1978 they would pack up their house in Deadwood and venture over to Rapid City with him. That summer, his daughter and baby girl would move into their home and thus their family was created. There was never a dull moment in the house. Over their 40 years together they spent a great deal of time traveling. They had a passion for motorcycles and she put in well over 100,000 miles. The two had no qualms jumping on a bike and riding to Wyoming or Montana for a few days. Eventually after the kids grew up, the pair would settle down on a beautiful piece of land between Sturgis and Deadwood. This would become the spot for many a family function. The family had a routine of meeting at the Colonial House once a week for lunch, as time passed Pizza Ranch in Sturgis became a family favorite. Shirley loved to have the entire family and her many friends over for a meal, a birthday dinner, a good ole fashioned party, or a holiday (Easter egg dying and Christmas being her favorite). Any event was an excuse for Shirley to spend time with her family and friends, these are the moments she was the happiest. She would establish friendships with many people, including some of the original founders of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. She spent years working at Rally Headquarters. Shirley would sew patches the week of the rally and became familiar to thousands. She liked to attend the races and help run the gypsy clubhouse, where she was a 19 year member of the Jackpine Gypsy Motorcycle Club. Motorcycles were a family affair, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren could be found racing on the weekends or taking rides with grandma and grandpa, whether it be a poker run, a leisurely ride through the hills, or a jaunt over to the Big Horns. Shirley and her daughter would take many mother/daughter mini vacations. Over the last few years they traveled to Camp Crook to visit her little sister and enjoyed spending time together taking pictures at Yellowstone National Park. Shirley was a 45+ year member of the VFW auxiliary Post 5969. She loved going to Deadwood to play the slots. Shirley had a competitive streak and spent many a day playing cribbage with her kids and grandkids. Her son and Shirley would play for a year and the winner would have to shell out some cash.

Shirley will be sadly missed by her partner for life; her daughter and her son; grandchildren and step grandchildren; stepdaughter and her family ;sister and her family; brother; nephew and his son; and several nieces and nephews.

She is now reunited with her two granddaughters, Ashley and BJ; brothers, Richard and David and husband, Wayne Lannen.

Per her request there will not be a funeral service, but instead we will be having a party in her honor at the VFW in Deadwood at 10am Friday, February 10, 2017. Lunch will be served. In lieu of flowers the family requests monetary donations go to the VFW Auxiliary Post 5969.
