"Canton, Mo. - Mrs. Mary Belle Baxter, 94, formerly of Canton, a homemaker, died at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 19, 1992) in Sunset Home in Quincy, Ill.

"Born Dec. 7, 1898, near Lewistown, Mrs. Baxter was a daughter of James H. and Etta Marks Hardin. She was a homemaker, a charter member of WSCS, and a member of Bluff Springs United Methodist Church, Evelyn Robe__ Circle, Better Home Buildings Extension Club, and Golden Rule Shrine 32, White Shrine of Jerusalem. She was a 4-H leader for 25 years.

On Nov. 23, 1922, she married Andrew H. Baxter in Canton. He died Jan. 7, 1988. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Halsey N. and B.J. Hardin, and two sisters, Sue Benning and Nell Bayne.

"Survivors include a son, William A. of Canton; three sisters, Nancy B. Horn, Etta Boulware and Isabelle Marks, all of Canton; three grandchildren, , . . .; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

"Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Bluff Springs United Methodist Church north of Canton by the Rev. Russell Branch and the Rev. David Ericson. Burial will be in Bluff Springs Cemetery.

"Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. today with family meeting friends 6-8 tonight in the Davis Funeral Home in Canton.

"Memorials may be made to Bluff Springs United Methodist Church or to Sunset Home in Quincy."

"On Thursday, November 23, 1922, at 8:30 a.m., Andrew Howard Baxter and Miss Mary Belle Hardin were united in the holy bonds of matrimony by Rev. T.E. Whitaker, pastor of the Bluff Springs Methodist church, officiating.
"The ceremony was performed at the country home of the bride's parents, seven miles north of Canton, in the presence of members of the families of the contracting parties.
"The bride is the accomplished daughter of James H. Hardin and Etta Marks Hardin and is a young lady of lovable disposition an pleasing personality, is well verse in the many arts of domestic science; formerly a student in Canton High School, an active worker in church and Sunday school and will make a helpmeet worthy to grace the fireside and home of the man of her choice.
"The bridegroom is the son of William F. Baxter and Emma Howard Baxter and is a young farmer of sterling qualities and high moral character, a graduate of Canton High School, active in the work of the Sunday school and a member of the Board of Stewards of the Bluff Springs Methodist church, and one of the membrs of the local farmers' club, and takes an interest in all community work.
"Both young people are members of prominent families and are thoroughly American, each of them tracing their ancestry back for more than an hundred years through citizens of the United States, and this union brings together two of the prioneer families of Lewis county.
"After a brief wedding trip to St. Louis the happy couple will be at home to their friends at the Baxter homestead where young Baxter will continue the extensive farming oprations in partnership with his father, in which he has heretofore been engaged."
