Eugene Deaton was Born on July 25, 1924 to Luther and Nannie Deaton of Oak Dale, Kentucky
and died on October 16, 2012 at the age of 88, after a full life.
Eugene was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Alma Spencer Deaton, and six of his seven brothers and sisters (Lela Mae, Thelma, Bernice, Lambert, and Frank).
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Karen Deaton of Lexington; his two daughters, Esther Livingston of Berea, and Iris Deaton of Lexington; his grandson Daniel Livingston of Lexington, great-grandson Jackson Livingston of Cincinnati, OH, his sister Violet
Barker, of Michigan, and many nieces and nephews.
Eugene's wishes were to have only a grave-side service, so we have gathered together with love and respect to honor him and to share our sorrow and great sense of loss.
Eugene grew up during the Great Depression. As a young man, he served for 3 years in World War II as a Medic and Sergent in the Army.
After the war, he attended Barber School and became a licensed barber.
In 1948, he married Alma Helen Spencer from Breathitt County. They lived in Jackson and Lexington for a few years, and then moved to the Rochester Michigan area where he ran his own barber shop for almost 20 years.
In the early 70's Eugene returned to Beattyville, Kentucky and began using his carpentry skills to earn a living. This is the Eugene that most of you know - the one with overalls, tools, and a truck. The self-made man who built homes and cabinetry, did plumbing and electrical work,
who could make or repair just about anything, and took great pride in his work. I doubt that there's anyone in this crowd for whom he has not built or fixed something.
Eugene had a reputation of being fair and honest-and generous (to a fault) with his time and
skills. He was tough as nails and strong as an ox-most people would think twice about
crossing him--but he was also kind of sentimental. He loved history and was an avid reader of historical non-fiction. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, and be was a great shot with both a pistol and a rifle. And he could tell the funniest stories that would have everybody laughing.
As a husband, father, and grandfather, Eugene was unselfish and worked hard to provide a good home for his family. He survived both cancer and a stroke, but it was the loss of Alma that nearly killed him.
Whether you knew him as a friend or as "Dad" "Buddy" or "Bluejean" You could always count
on Eugene-we all did-and perhaps that's what we'll miss most.
