John was a Civil War Veteran of the Union Army - Caldwell County Home Guard and the 6th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He was the father of seven children with Matilda including: Cora Dell, Jefferson Lee, Cort A., Denna Z., Kipp D., Pross T. and Darl Beckett Cross. John was the son of William Hurlburt Cross and Fanny (Johnston) Cross.
