Dr. Robert H. Gore, III

Dr. Robert H. Gore III passed away peacefully at his home on February 7, 2017 at the age of 77. He grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and enlisted in the United States Army in 1959 at the age of 19, where he was a specialist in Morse code intercepts while stationed in west Germany. Returning home after his honorable discharge he pursued and earned a PhD in Marine Invertebrate Zoology from the University of Miami, Rosentiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. He conducted research in marine biology and ecology with the Smithsonian Institution for ten years, discovering several new species of crabs and was a Coastal Zone Management Supervisor for the Collier County Natural Resources Management Department for five years. He has published more than seventy-five papers in the scientific and popular press, and authored several books including "The Gulf of Mexico", "Songs from Solitude" and "Right Smart to Say". He was a consultant to many state and county governmental agencies, and established the Naithloriendun Wildlife Sanctuary in southwest Florida near the Big Cypress Swamp. He was inspired by his grandfather, Robert Hayes Gore, Sr., publisher of the Fort Lauderdale News and former governor of Puerto Rico, and his father R. H. Gore Jr. It was from this legacy that he became a lifelong conservationist and shared his love of the Florida wilderness with children and adults, through guided forest walks and folk music gatherings at his old Florida style Cracker home. He was also an avid and highly skilled oenologist, gourmet cook and musician, with a passion for dulcimer, six and twelve string guitar and harmonica.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Sue Ellen St. Amant and parents, Robert H. Gore Jr. and Margaret Powers Gore.
He is survived by his brother, Paul Gore of Bozeman, Montana, sisters, Ann Gore of Charlotte, North Carolina and Jane Gore of Mint Hill, North Carolina and his sons, Robert S. Gore of Dania Beach, Florida and Daniel Gore of Port St John, Florida with three grandchildren, Conor, Cailin and Meaghan.
The funeral mass will be at St. Teresa Catholic Church in Titusville, Florida on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 10:00 A.M.
