MOS: 2142 Tracked Vehicle Repairman, Amphibien Tractor.
John was born and raised in Brookings and there all of his life, until he enlisted in the Marines 6 October 1966, at a recruiting office in Denver, Colorade.
When John arrived in Vietnam 25 September 1967, he was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Amtrac Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. A couple of tanks from Bravo Company were assigned to reinforce India Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. The Marines were operating in the vicinity of Jones Creek near Mai Xe and 9 kilomters northeast of Dong Ha when Bravo Company made contact with hostile forces. John died as a result of a gunshot wound to the back from hostile rifle fire. The Marines lost 2 men during the engagement.
Survived by his parents, John E and Jean S of 822 8th Avenue, Brookings, South Dakota.
