Marine Cpl. Neal was assigned to 1st Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Neal was killed while conducting combat operations. Jacob had decided while still in high school that he would join the military but 9/11 was the defining moment for him. When he graduated from Crockett High School in Texas, he signed up and wanted to go to Iraq. His unit was not scheduled to leave for Iraq for some time so he went to Michigan to join a unit that was deploying to Iraq soon. Jacob always tried to help others. He was a person who wanted to try his best and to succeed for himself – he never asked anyone for help.
