48th Mayor of Phoenix, Arizona. He served in that position from January 4, 1960 until January 2, 1964.

Mardian, Sam Jr.
Sam Mardian, Jr., 96, mayor of the City of Phoenix 1960-64, passed away on November 23, 2015, at the Beatitudes Campus in Phoenix (built by Mardian Construction Co. in 1965). He was the son of Akabe and Sam Mardian, Sr., born June 24, 1919 in Pasadena, CA. where he was raised with his sister and 3 brothers. Young Sam played on school baseball teams with his classmate Jackie Robinson and the two remained close friends throughout their lives. Sam served in the Signal Corps USAAF as Captain in WWII, and began his career as an accountant. He and Lucy moved to Phoenix from Pasadena, CA in 1947 to join his brothers in business, Mardian Construction Co. Sam took on many active roles in the city serving as a Director of First National Bank and St. Joseph's Hospital, President, Phoenix and Valley of the Sun YMCA, V.P. Valley Forward Association, charter member of the Phoenix Forty, Campaign Manager for Governor Howard Pyle, Chairman of the Senator Paul Fannin Campaign Committee, Trustee of the Madison School District, attended by all his children, Board of Directors of the Phoenix Chapter, National Conference of Christians and Jews, State Compensation Fund of Arizona, Executive Board, Theodore Roosevelt Council Boy Scouts of America, President, Valley Beautiful Citizens Council, Trustee Haigazian College, Beirut Lebanon, Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, League of Arizona Cities and Towns, and was member of Kiwanis and the Phoenix Country Club. His tireless efforts on behalf of our community are still bearing fruit. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Lucy in 2006, brothers, Aram, Daniel, Robert, sister, Florence and grandson, James Mardian, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Pickens, sons, Sam III, James, Sr. (Barbara), Doug, and Steve (Courtney) Mardian, grandchildren, Aram (Norma Perales), Tyler, Tana, Reagan, and Tate Mardian, great-grandchildren, Diego and Alina Mardian, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Friday, December 4, 2015 from 4:00-7:00pm, Hansen Mortuary, 8314 N. 7th St., Phoenix, AZ. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 1:00pm, Christ Church Anglican, 5811 N. 20th St., Phoenix, AZ. The family would appreciate memorials in Sam's memory to Beatitudes Campus Foundation, 1610 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85021. Arrangements entrusted to Hansen Mortuaries, and Post Scripts by Posey, LLC.
