David G. Ballengee was born on May 20, 1845 in Hinton, WV to John R. Ballengee and Rebecca Graham. He died on October 22, 1939 at his home in Clayton, WV at the age of 94 years and 5 months, his death being attributed to the "infirmities of his age".

At his death he was called the oldest postmaster, both in age and years of service, in West Virginia and probably in the entire United States. He died only one month before the completion of sixty years of service. He was appointed as postmaster of Clayton by President Hayes on November 10, 1879 at the establishment of this post office and served continuously until his death. In later years much of the duties of the post office were handled by his eldest daughter Miss Ella Cora Ballengee who also ran the household since the death of her mother, Delphia Jane Flint Ballengee, in 1918.

David G. Ballengee was a member of one of the earliest pioneer families in the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia. Born at the old Ballengee home in the fair grounds at Hinton in 1845, his mother, Rebecca Graham Ballengee, died in 1852 when he was only seven year old. He was reared by his grandparents Joseph and Rebecca Graham (mother and grandmother named Rebecca). He inherited the old Graham family seat at the foot of Keeney's Knob, Clayton, from his grandmother where he had lived continuously since his youth. Before the formation of Summers County, West Virginia he worked as an assistant surveyor when the districts of Monroe County were laid out. During the Civil War he drove a team of horses in a train of twenty-five wagons. He was described as being public spirited and widely known for his hospitality, integrity and straight-forwardness. His civic interests were centered around his advocacy for the building of improved roads.
