Judge Robert Middleton Heard, 88, of 173 Heard Drive, Elberton, GA., died Thursday evening, June 12, 2003, at his home.
Judge Heard was born in Elberton, a son of the late L. Martin and Mamie Latimer Heard. His grandfather was Asbury Latimer, United States Senator of South Carolina. His great-great-grandfather was Stephen Heard, Revolutionary Governor of Georgia.
He was a graduate of Elberton High School, the University of Georgia where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity, and a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law. Upon his graduation from Law School, he was elected to the State Legislature in 1939, and resigned to enter the United States Navy in 1942. He practiced law for over 60 years serving as President of the Georgia Bar Association, the Northern Circuit Bar Association and the Elberton Bar Association. He was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and recipient of the Law School's Distinguished Service Scroll. He was President of the University of Georgia Alumni Society and Judge of the State Court for 25 years.
In Elberton, he served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Rotary Club, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Granite City Bank, now Regions Bank, and was a Senior Partner in the Law Firm of Heard, Leverett and Adams. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of Elberton, where he taught a Sunday School Class for 17 years.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Price Heard; one daughter, Peggy Heard Galis and her husband Denny Galis of Athens and two grandsons, Anthony Middleton Galis and Charles Heard Galis. He was preceded in death by his son, John Thomas Heard.
