120th Infantry Division
========
IN MEMORIAM
By Woodrow Arrington
(The following was dedicated by the author to Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Messer, parents of the late Sergeant Willie Messer, who made the supreme sacrifice in World War II).
We shall meet but we will miss him
There will be one vacant chair
At our fireside sad and lonely
Often will our bosom swell
At remembrance of the story
How our noble Willie fell.
True they tell us wreaths of glory
Ever more will deck his brow.
But this soothes the anguish only
Sweeping over our heart strings now.
How he strove to bear our banner
Through the thickest of the fight
And uphold our country's honor,
In the strength of God's great might.
He does not sleep where he's fallen
In a deep and narrow bed,
For some other place was given
By the Lord for him to rest.
