German-American social psychologist and humanistic philosopher who was associated with the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory. Fromm authored several influential books which include "Escape From Freedom", "The Art of Loving", "To Have or To Be?" among others. Psychoanalyst. He was an internationally renowned Jewish-German-American social psychologist, psychoanalyst, and humanistic philosopher. He was associated with what became known as the Frankfurt School of critical theory. Some of his major works are Escape from Freedom (1941), the Art of Loving (1956), The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness (1973), To Have or to Be? (1976). He was married three times. In 1934 he emigrated to the United States. The last years of his career he spent in Mexico teaching. In 1976 he retired to Locarno, Switzerland. He died of a heart attack at Muralto, Switzerland.
