Marlyn Gordon Alfson, son of Gordon and Rubye (Hanse) Alfson, was born January 1, 1946 in Morris, Minnesota. Marlyn, also known as "Red", grew up in Cyrus, Minnesota. He graduated from Cyrus High School in 1963. Following his high school graduation Marlyn went to the Minnesota School of Business and worked for Land O' Lakes Creamery. In 1965 he enlisted in the United States Navy. While stationed at Moffet Field in Mountain View, California he met a lovely woman by the name of Anna Leigh Smith. Both were stationed at Moffet Field and worked together as air traffic controllers. On February 3, 1968, he was united in marriage to Anna. Over the years Marlyn and his family were privileged to be sent to duty stations around the world which included: Kodiak, Alaska; Brunswick, Georgia; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Rota, Spain. During that time Marlyn also served aboard aircraft carriers, the USS Nimitz and the USS John F. Kennedy. After 24 years of honorable service, Navy Air Traffic Control Senior Chief Marlyn Alfson retired in 1989. Following retirement, the family moved to Pensacola, Florida, then to Virginia Beach, Virginia. In 2001, Marlyn and Anna moved home to Cyrus, where they have resided until the time of Marlyn's death.
As an early teen, Marlyn taught himself how to play the guitar. He often spoke of the guitar and amp his parents gifted him with, which led to his great love of music. This love of music was seen throughout his life as he was often playing guitar and singing in a band. Marlyn also enjoyed playing the banjo, writing music, riding motorcycles, and working with his hands. He was a great friend to many people and was often the go-to guy to borrow a tool or get some help.
Marlyn died peacefully on February 15, 2017 while under hospice care at St. William's Living Center in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, having lived to reach the age of 71 years. At the time of his passing he was fortunate to have the presence of his wife and sister by his side as he left this world.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Anna (Smith) Alfson of Miami, Florida; one son: Troy (Karen) Alfson of Brookings, South Dakota; one daughter: Teresa (Mark) Musick of Prairieville, Louisiana; four grandchildren, Justin, Samantha, Avery and Nathan; his father, Gordon Selmer Alfson; and sister, Constance (Dennis) Solvie of Hancock. He was preceded in death by his mother; Rubye (Hanse) Alfson.
