Pauline Cadieux was raised in Burlington, Vermont's Old North End. Polly was a student at the Nazareth School where she participated in drama and music. She graduated from Burlington High School in the class of 1947 and, after earning a retail selling certificate from the state Dept. of Education, worked at the downtown Montgomery Ward department store. Following her marriage to Francis on July 16, 1949, the couple lived on Charles Street before building their home in South Burlington in 1953. From that time on she liked to say, "My door is open to all."

Polly was outgoing and made friends everywhere she went. She was an adventurer who would make a thousand-mile road trip at the drop of a hat. Polly was well known by fellow mariners on Lake Champlain. The family boat, "Seven Ems," carried her and her seven children on many adventures; only a couple of them required assistance from the Coast Guard. She played in the Women's Shuffleboard League for many years, and was league President for five years. She served as a coach for Little League baseball, and ice hockey at many levels. She was an expert marksman taught by her father, a pistol champion. She enjoyed hunting and fishing to the fullest.

Polly was known for her advocacy for children and animals. She was fiercely independent. She insisted on helping split and stack her heating firewood into her last year.
