Eugene's father was Leamon Ross Weatherspoon and his mother was Bernice Grimes. Bernice had married Alphonse Fayard in 1937.

Well Known Local Boy Drowns After Diving Into Pool

Sgt. Eugene Weatherspoon, 23, Army Air Force, well-known Liberty boy, was drowned in the pool at the Stuttgart Air Field at Stuttgart, Ark., on Thursday, June 28, about 8 p. m., according to information received by The Vindicator.

"Cotton" Weatherspoon was inducted into the service from Liberty and had been in the army more than four years, without any overseas duty.

The body was taken to Bay Saint Louis, Miss., arriving there Saturday afternoon, June 30, accompanied by Staff Sergeant Robert E. McMichael.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, July 1, with full military honors, the pallbearers, color bearer and bugler being from Gulfport, Miss., flying field. The services were conducted by Rev. Father Martin and internment was in Cedar Rest Cemetery at Bay Saint Louis.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Bernice Weatherspoon Fayard.

Full particulars of the drowning have not been learned. It was said that Cotton did not rise after he had made a dive in the swimming pool.
