Former Consul General of the United States at Canton, China. He was in the Consular Service of the U.S.for 38 years.
Born in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, he was in the mercantile business in China from 1869 to 1877, entering the government service as acting interpreter to the Foochow Consulate in 1877. His subsequent appointments were Vice Consulate Foochow 1878 of which Consulate he was in charge, 1878-1879;Canton 1879-1880.Interpreter to Consul General Shanghai 1880-1884; in charge Shanghai Consulate 1882-1884
Interpreter to legation at Peking 1884-1890. Chinese Secretary to legation, 1900-1901;Chinese secretary to special pienipotentiary of the U.S. April to September 1901. Consul General at Mukden, 1904-1906, Consul General at large July 1, 1906-August 22,1912.Consul General at Canton from 1912 until he was stricken with illness in New York in 1915.During the siege of Peking by the Boxers, he was one of the beleaguered company within the walls of the British compound, and bore himself gallantly. Li Hung Chang, on behalf of the Emperor, conferred upon him the Order of the Double Dragon, a distinguished honor in recognition of valuable service as interpreter in the peace negotiations between China and Japan.As the Chinese Secretary to the legation during the Boxer Rebellion, Cheshire and other Western diplomatic legations were under siege in Beijing until rescued by the China Relief Expeditions. Cheshire was instrumental in the adoption of America's first educational exchange program with China. Cheshire eventually became fluent in both Mandarin and Cantonese as well as other dialects. While learning Mandarin in Peking (Beijing), he shaved his head, wore a pigtail,and dressed in traditional Chinese clothing. He was named after his father Jonas' good friend Fleming Duncan (ferry boat business), and never married.Fleming Duncan Cheshire was also a Navy Veteran, enlisted on April, 1866 at 17 years old.
