OBITUARY Iron River Reporter Feb 19 1932 “Olaf Benson, First Settler In Bates, Dies: Aged Pioneer Passes Away At Home Of Son In Chicago”
Olaf Benson, 83, the first settler in Bates township, died early Wednesday morning at the home of his son Dr. David Benson in Chicago. Death is attributed to the complications attending upon old age.
Mr. Benson was born October 20, 1848 in Sunne, Varmland, Sweden. After his marriage to Catherine Olson, he moved to a farm in Stora Tune, Dalarne, Sweden, where the family lived until the year 1879, when Mr. and Mrs. Benson and two children, Victor and Gertrude, emigrated to the United States. They located in Joliet, Ill. where Mr. Benson worked in the steel mills for one year.
From Joliet the family moved to Norway, Michigan late in the year 1880 and there Mr. Benson was employed in the iron mines. In 1881 he filed entry on a homestead in Bates township, then a part of Marquette county.
In the spring of 1882 the family moved to the homestead, which remained their home until two years ago when the property was sold. The Benson family, the first settlers in Bates, was shortly followed to that township by the families of August Krans, Ole Helgemo, Charles Gustafson and Peter Nordin.
WAS PIONEER Mr. Benson, having entered upon a pioneer existence here, experienced all of the hardships and privations which are the lot of the pioneer. He cut his own wagon road to the home of his nearest neighbor, where this neighbor joined with a third neighbor to complete the road for wagon travel.
At that time household goods were hauled by team on the old Florence road, now the Chicagoan lake route, to a point one and one half miles west of what has been known as the Chicagoan mine, and from that point were carried on men’s shoulders to the home of the settlers.
At various times Mr. Benson held offices in the township and was a charter member of the first Baptist church in Iron River.
He was preceded in death by his wife in May, 1923, and is survived by four children, Victor Benson and Mrs. Gertrude Jacques of Bates, Mrs. Ellen Monseur [Mansur] of Los Angeles, and Dr. David Benson of Chicago, also three grandchildren, the children of Victor Benson, and three greatgrandchildren. One sister Mrs. O.J. Frycklund of Prentiss, Wis. and a brother Lars of Sweden also survive him.
The body will arrive in Iron River this morning and will be taken to the Johns Funeral home. From there it will be taken to the home of Victor Benson Saturday.
The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock from the Victor Benson home, with the Rev. Axel Anderson, pastor of the Iron River Baptist church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Bates cemetery.
Pall bearers will be Charles Olson, Peter A. Carlson, John Erickson, Amil Thunander, August Krans and John Soderquist, all pioneers of Bates township and close personal friends of Mr. Benson.
Mr. Benson lived at the home of his daughter Mrs. Gertrude Jacques until October of last year, when he went to Chicago to spend the winter with his son. On several occasions he visited California and in the past several years spent much of his time there with his daughter.
Last summer he appeared to be in good health and did a good deal of carpenter work for Mrs. Jacques as well as clearing a half acre of land.
