Died Wernecke - at Newton on Sunday, November 28, Carl Wernecke, aged 64 years. Mr. Wernecke was a native of Saxony,Germany, which place he left in company with two brothers and a sister in 1848. Arriving in America the party immediately came to Manitowoc county and settled upon the site of his present fine farm upon which he remained until his death, his brothers purchasing tracts adjoining his. He applied to the business of farming a degree of intelligence which made him a prominent character in the growth of the town of Newton and which naturally insured a large degree of success. In the early days he was made town treasurer when the territory now know as Newton, Liberty and Eaton all went under the former name, and when in his rounds as tax gatherer he was liable to meet as many Indians as white men. Later he was elected a member of the county board and filled that position for several terms. He was always regarded as one of the most intelligent members of that body and enjoyed the fullest confidence of his associates. He was the originator of the Newton Town Fire Insurance Co.,and gave that organization a start which pushed it forward to success. His last visit to the city was on Wednesday last;when as a member of the County Board of Supervisors he was in attendance at it session. Returning home that afternoon he contracted a severe cold to which, however, no particular attention was paid as nothing of a serious nature was anticipated. Pneumonia seized him, and when medical attendance was summoned it was too late and death resulted on Sunday evening. He leaves six grown children and a large circle of friends to mourn his death.
