RICHMOND HILL - Charles Norman Baisden (USAF, Ret.), 96, died Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Magnolia Manor in Richmond Hill.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church.

Inurnment will follow in the Joanne H. Roberts Memorial Garden.

Savannah Morning News, February 23, 2017At 18, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, but seeking new adventures, soon found himself on a ship going to China after joining the American Volunteer Group later to be forever known as the Flying Tigers. He served as an armorer on the P-40 Tomahawk until the U.S. Army Air Corps disbanded the volunteer group. In 1943, he rejoined the Army Air Corps. Prior to being called back into WWII, he Willa Prell, and in three months, married her, packed her off to PA, and rejoined his unit, as a B25 gunner. He was recalled to serve in the Korean Conflict as a gunner on the B29. Transitioning into the regular US Air Force, he served as a boom operator on the KC-97 and retired in 1964, at which time he, Willa and family moved back to Savannah. They lived on Wilmington Island for 46 years. During that time, he worked at American Cryogenics, followed by practicing jewelry design and repair at Aladdin's Cave on River St. He is survived by his wife, Willa; daughter, Jerry Rae B Quinn (Al); sons, Daniel R Baisden (Nancy) and William Charles Baisden (Judy); eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
