David Lowell “Dave” Smith passed away in the early morning hours of February 23, 2017 in the Intensive Care Unit at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

He was born August 24, 1946 in Salt Lake City to Orvil Beckstrand Smith and Dorothy Nielsen Smith. He grew up in the University area of Salt Lake City next to Dorothy’s parents, Oluf C. Nielsen and Anna E. Nielsen, where there was a great family experience.

Dave was a fiercely loving and devoted son, brother, uncle, companion, father figure, and friend that was well known to all for his gentle nature, kindness, and generosity.

Dave was a great mechanic; he loved what he did and he could fix anything. He worked at Rex’s Automotive for decades and was in his trade for over fifty years.

He loved Chevrolets, Bonneville Raceway, drag racing, going to Nationals with his best friend, Mark Madsen, and the many, many houseboat trips to Lake Powell with Mark and his family and many lifelong friends. He loved his family and the girls he helped raise, Cindy (Williams) Dickerson and Mindy (Williams) Roberts.

Survived by his sister and dearest friend, Deanne “Dee” Wood; nephew, of whom he was so very proud, Dr. Brent Smith Wood, Brent’s wife, Summer C. Wood, and their daughters; wonderful niece, Grace M. Wood; and new niece, Vivian E. Wood. Preceded in death by his father, Orvil Beckstrand Smith; mother, Dorothy Nielsen Smith; and loving companion, Darlene Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 in the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary Chapel. Friends may call prior to the services from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.
