Darlene Jeanette Christenson was born March 29, 1929, at Hitchcock, South Dakota to Vernon G. and Tilda (Tollefson) Christenson. She grew up in the Bonilla area and graduated from Bonilla High School. Darlene earned a teaching degree at Huron College and taught rural school at the Tollefson School in Altoona Township.
On November 22, 1947, she married James E. Olsen at the Bonilla Presbyterian Church. After their marriage, they farmed in the Hitchcock area. Her husband James passed away in 2008. Darlene lived on the farm for 66 years before moving to Huron in 2013.
Darlene was a member of the Bonilla Presbyterian Church, where she directed children’s music for many years. She was also a member of the Hitchcock American Legion Auxiliary, Extension Club, and the Oasis Order of the Eastern Star in Tulare.
To say that Darlene enjoyed music is an inadequate description of her interest and her talent. She was a gifted pianist who could play almost anything. She also enjoyed cake decorating, and was well-known for her huge flower garden at the farm. Darlene’s favorite pastime, however, was spending time with her family. She was known as "Grandma Darlene" not just to her family, but to all her many young friends through the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James; her daughter, Jeannie Kay; and her brother, Stanley.
Grateful to have shared her life are her children and their spouses, James and Kathleen Olsen, Jr. of Hitchcock and Julie and Steve Boomsma of Wolsey; six grandchildren, Collin and his wife, Jamie Olsen, Andrea and her husband, Matt Morlock, Kristin and her husband, John Trana, Erica and her husband, Rodney Mittelstedt, Aaron and his wife, Amanda Boomsma, and A’Lece and her husband, Matt Mathison; nine great-grandchildren, Connor and Ryan Olsen, Blake Kannegieter and Easton Morlock, Sydney and Shelby Trana, Nick and Kiersten Mittelstedt, and Ian Boomsma; one sister, Gerry Graves of Minnetonka, Minnesota; and two nephews, David Graves of Bloomington, Minnesota and Michael Graves of St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
