Middletown MM recordsJohn Croasdale was born the 11th day of the 5th month (July), 1666 which record is entered in the Bolland Monthly Meeting minutes at Yorkshire. He was the second son of Thomas & Agnes (Hathornthwaite) Croasdale. The family were of a small, ancient hamlet called Newhey which was anciently a hamlet within the hundred of Lancashire.

His family came to the colonies in 1682 on the ship The Lamb, John Tench, master, which left Liverpool on 26 June 1682 and arrived on the Delaware on 22 Oct 1682. It was a small ship, burthen 130 tons. [The Liverpool port books for 1682 are located in the Public Records Office in London. The book dealing with the "Lamb" is E190/1345/11]

A Friends Certificate of Removal was issued on 7th day 4th mo [June] 1682 by the Settle Monthly Meeting in Yorkshire to a group about to go to America. This group consisted of:
Nicholas Waln, his wife Jane (Turner) and three children;
Cuthbert Hayhurst his wife Mary (Rudd=Waln's maternal aunt) and family;
Thomas Wiglesworth, his wife Alice (Hayhurst-sister of Cuthbert);
Thomas Walmsley, his wife Elizabeth (Rudd=Waln's cousin)and six children;
Thomas Croasdill, his wife Agnes (Hawthornthwaite) and six children;
Thomas Stackhouse, his wife Margery (Hayhurst=sister of Cuthbert);
Ellin (Stackhouse) Cowgill, widow and her children;
William Hayhurst, widower, his wife Margaret (Rudd=Waln's maternal aunt) died prior to emigration

His family settled on Neshaminy Creek in Bucks County where his father Thomas died within weeks of their arrival and was buried at Neshaminy burial grounds on 9mo/Nov 2, 1682.

[In 1692 that area was re-designated as Middletown Township, and what is now Langhorne was a part of Middletown Township. Neshaminy Mtg was re-named Middletown Mtg in 1702]

Wm Penn had not assigned a Prothonotary until Dec 1684 [Phineas Pemberton] and official records were not kept until that time. The Inventory of his father's estate was not taken until 8 Nov 1684. Administration of the estate of Thomas Croasdale, Will #102, was granted on 10 Dec 1684 to widow Agnes and son John Croasdale herein.

His mother Agnes died 2 years later and was buried on 8mo/Oct 20, 1684 also at Neshaminy. The Inventory of her estate was taken on 10 Nov 1685 by Nicholas Waln and Robert Heaton. Administration of the estate of Agnes Croasdale, Will #114, was granted on 1 Nov 1686 to sons William & John Croasdale.

John Croasdale married Marah, daughter of John Chapman, deceased, on 2mo/Apr 28, 1697 at the home of her widowed mother Jane (Sadler) Chapman at Wrightstown under the auspices of Middletown Monthly Meeting. The witness list is extensive and includes the families of Croasdale, Chapman, Potts, Hayhurst, Heaton, Stackhouse, Waln, etc. A copy of the marriage certificate is attached to this memorial.

Middletown Mtg Record of Commery 1683 records John Croasdale was buried the 16th day of ye 10th month [Dec] 1706. He died intestate leaving wife Marah and 3 children Thomas, Ruth and Agnes.

Inventory #11 of his estate was taken on 10mo/Dec 25, 1706 by John Cutler, Jonathan Scaife, Thomas Baynes & John Cowgil. On 26 Feb 1706/07 a £300 Admin Bond was granted to Marah Croasdale; her bondmen were William Croasdale, gent. and Thomas Baynes, tailor.

On 8mo/Oct 6, 1709 widow Marah Croasdale received authorization to marry neighboring Friend John Wildman, son of Martin and Ann (Ward) Wildman, and had two daughters Mercy & Elizabeth.

Note: The Borough of Langhone (originally called Attleborough) was not established until 1876 and named for Jeremiah Langhorne, Prov Councilor who was also a witness to the marriage of John & Marah Croasdale.
