John and Gladys were married on July 13, 1935 in Mt. Shasta, California. They had three children, Larry, born in Mt. Shasta, California; Janice, born in Lebanon, Oregon; and Randy born in Pomona California. John and Gladys enjoyed 67 years together before Gladys passed away in 2002.
John felt a strong calling for full time Christian ministry, whether or not he was paid for it. He served in many roles, including pastoring, teaching, leading singing, administering, or being a lay leader. The various paying jobs he held were to provide a living for his family and they were numerous. For example, during his working career he was a logger, Fuller Brush salesman, bus driver, watchmaker, precision machinist, insurance salesman, printer, and commercial representative for Sears.
He spent the major part of his life in Southern California, but moved from San Bernardino to the Sacramento area for the last 14 years. His final years were spent at St. John's Retirement Village and Stollwood Convalescent Hospital in Woodland. He appreciated the loving care he received from the staff at St. John's and often would say, "This is a wonderful place!"
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; sister, Lila; brothers, Cecil, Dwight and Waldo; and son, Randy. He is survived by his brother Merle (Mabel) Birch; son Larry (Sharon) Birch; daughter, Janice (Dan) Kieft; daughter in-law Coleen Birch; grandchildren, Karen (Andrew) Goldberg, Kathy (Butch) Mulcahey, Kristen (Mike) Cederlind, Jeff (Angie) Birch, Brehk (Peggy) Kieft, Derk (Cindy Fenn) Kieft, Jeremy (Jenny) Birch; step-grandchild, Thomas Croll; and great grandchildren, Ryan Cederlind, Anna Cederlind, David Goldberg, Daniel Goldberg, Joey Mulcahey, Stephen Mulcahey, Michael Mulcahey, Callie Birch, Cody Birch, Matthew Birch, Mackenzie Birch.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm, March 10, at Mountain View Cemetery, San Bernardino, California. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Retirement Village, 135 Woodland Avenue, Woodland, CA 95695.
