Joseph was the son of Henry Preston Davidson and Nancy Brown. He married Jane King. They were member of the Bland Street Methodist Church in Bluefield, WV.

Davidson, Joseph A. - Private, Company D, listed as Joseph Davidson, enlisted on 8/21/1861 at Princeton, Mercer County [West] Virginia, "Sick family, excused after serving 20 days," - 1860 MCC, age 41, farmer, married to Jane, age 40. Enumerated on the 1850 Census of Mercer County, [West] Virginia, age 31, farmer, married to Jane, age 32. Listed on the 1860 Mercer County Slave Schedule as the owner of 7 slaves. [Owned 2 in 1850]. Born on 2/24/1819. Son of Henry Preston Davidson and Nancy Brown Davidson. Married to Jane King in November 1844. Appears on the 1870 Census of Mercer County, West Virginia, Beaver Pond District, age 51, farmer, married to Jane, age 51. Enumerated on the 1880 Census of Mercer County, West Virginia, Beaver Pond District, age 61, farmer, married to Jane, 61. A notation in the August 29, 1902 edition of the "Bluefield Daily Telegraph", reads, "Joseph Davidson, who has been dangerously ill for several days, is improving rapidly." Died on 10/18/1907. Buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Bluefield, West Virginia. Service in other units is uncertain. Joseph A. Davidson was the grandson of pioneer Joseph Davidson.


Joseph's farms were located at the mouth of Abbs Valley and on Laurel Creek in Mercer County, WV. In 1892, he moved to Monroe Co., WV after selling part of his possessions, he purchased the George W. Hutchinson farm and the Caleb E. Johnson farm adjoining Union, Monroe Co., WV, adding 3,000 acres of farmland.


Joseph died at his daughter's house in Graham (now Bluefield), Tazewell Co., VA.

Jos Davidson, aged 88 years, and one of the best known men of this section, died at the home of his son in Graham this morning after a short illness. Although Mr Davidson was old he was quite active and healthy until recently he contracted asthma which hastened his death.

Mr Davidson was a general favorite among those who knew him best and a devoted Christian.He is survived by three sons and one daughter and fourteen grandchildren.

The funeral services will be conducted by Rev J T Frazier, assisted by P C Clark, at the Bland Street Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, after which interment will take place at Walnut Grove cemetery.
