Norma Lee (Caudill) Barton of Jefferson, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, March 2, 2017. She was 78. She had been ill with cancer for more than a year.
Born in Cumberland, KY, on July 4, 1938, Norma lived in southeastern Kentucky until the early 1950s when she moved to Jefferson. While waitressing at the Jefferson Diner, she met Robert G. “Bob” Barton, a diner regular. Over many servings of pie and coffee, Bob talked Norma into a first date, and then more dates. The two eventually married on Aug. 1, 1959, a partnership that lasted for 48 years until Bob’s death in 2007.
Throughout her years as a young wife and mother, Norma was active as an elementary school room mother, Boy Scout den mother, Girl Scout troop leader, and in the JAHS Athletic and Music Booster organizations. An expert seamstress, she created prom dresses and majorette outfits, hauled kids to baton lessons and band practice, and always managed to have homemade baked treats on hand for the teen-agers that trooped through her house. In her later years, Norma became very active in quilting and other crafts, forming the Lake Shore Quilters with friends in 1988, a group that continues to this day. An enthusiastic reader, Norma hosted regular discussions with her book club (yes, they call themselves the “Happy Bookers,”) for the past decade. For more than 30 years, she also had been a member of the Jefferson United Methodist Church, where she served in many volunteer activities.
While primarily a homemaker, she had loved her last full-time job, working as a dental assistant in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. Later in life, she also cleaned offices and served as a poll worker. A caring neighbor and generous friend, Norma was considered a surrogate mother and grandmother by several families in town.
Norma is survived by her daughters, Barbara A. Barton, Ph.D., of Cortland, NY; Mary M. Barton, of Ridgefield, CT; Mary’s husband, David A. Sigworth, and their children, Claire Sigworth, a senior at Purdue University, and Tate Sigworth, a senior in high school. She is also survived by her son, Thomas T. Barton, of Baltimore, OH, and his children and grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her mother, Bertha Caudill.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, Ohio, at 11 A. M., Saturday, March 11, 2017, with the Rev. Daniel Bilkert officiating. All are welcome. A brief graveside committal ceremony will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. In lieu of calling hours, friends are invited to join the family at luncheon in her memory afterward at the church.
The Fleming & Billman Funeral Directors and Crematory, 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson is honored to serve the Norma Lee Barton family. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Jefferson United Methodist Church Memorial Fund (above address) or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, OH 44004.
