Ella Gertrude Stine was ninth of the ten children of Hester Frances (née Stansbury) and Charles Stine, born in Arrowsmith Township, McLean County, Illinois, where her family farmed.

Ella Stine and F. W. (Frank William) Zick were married on 5 July 1894 in Valley Springs, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. The couple's first child, Earl Carl, was born there in 1895. By 1898, the Zick family had moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where the couple's second child, Hester F., was born.

"Besides being a member of the Tenth Street Methodist church [Ella Zick] was a member of the Friendship circle, Women's Society of Christian Service, Woman's Relief corps, and the Royal Neighbors of America."*
