1st wife of James Harvey Riley, married McDonough County, Illinois in 12 July 1866.

According to husband's Civil War pension application, Mary died 1890 in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas.

Four children from this marriage appear on census records or in the Civil War pension application, but only one (Ella Mae Riley Davis) survived to adulthood. James Harvey Riley remarried in May 1890 in Van Buren, Crawford County, AR.

Census and other records indicate Mary F Apple's parents moved frequently, and her own young family seems to track her parents' movements to include: Illinois on the 1860 census, to Orange County Indiana in 1870, then stints in Kansas and Arkansas, where Mary dies. James Harvey Riley remarries in May 1890 in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas. He is on the 1900 census in Oklahoma, back in Arkansas in 1910, and then back in Oklahoma by 1920.

Mary was the eldest of six children, four sons and two daughters, born to Lucinda Allstott and David Allen Apple, a pioneering couple who moved by covered wagon throughout the Midwest. The longest lived of Mary's siblings, John Wesley Apple 1852-1938 , will preserve much of the family's history in an interview shortly before his death by the Works Progress Administration. Her parents and siblings mostly settle around Seligman, Barry County MO, where the brothers become successful businessmen. Except for Mary, who dies first down in Arkansas, a local newspaper will report on each of the deaths of each member of the David Allen Apple family, referring to Lucinda as "Grandma Apple".

Mary's mother Lucinda Allstott was born in Orange Cty, Indiana, and has three generations of direct ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. Johann Martin Altstatt (1699 Germany - 1782 Berks Cty PA) and his wife and sons and wife's parents were the first to arrive in America, in 1729. The early Allstots became British citizens at the Pennsylvania statehouse, now Independence Hall, in Philadelphia, before fighting with George Washington. The gravestone for Johann's wife, Anna Judith Walter, is carved in German and still stands (memorial # 30589053).

Mary's father David Allen Apple fought in the Mexican War with an Indiana unit, before marrying her mother in 1848 in Paoli, Orange County, Indiana. There is an Apple Family Chapel cemetery in that location. His grandfather Daniel Apple (abt 1761 PA - abt 1849 Guilford Cty PA) also fought in the Revolution.

Note: Mary's middle name appears as "Jane" in one place, on her husband's application for a Civil War pension. This is probably an error. He lists both his wives on the application, and his 2nd wife's middle name was Jane.
