Attorney and diplomat. he graduated from Phillips Andover Academy, received his bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College in 1874, and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1877. He practiced law in Portland, Maine and served on the staff of Alonso Garcelon in 1879-1880. Gerry later practiced in New York City, and in 1885 he was appointed US Vice Consul at Le Havre, France. He resigned in 1887. Gerry and his wife were both wealthy, and Gerry was frequently in ill health, so they continued to reside and travel in Europe after his early retirement.
