In June 1863, he was absent on recruiting duty. In July 1864, he became an aide-de-camp to General Custer. Military records list him near Middletown, Virginia on October 31, 1864; near Alexandria in November 1864 through January 1865 and again in July through August 1865; in Hempstead, Texas September 1, 1865 and Austin December 1865; and at Ft. Bridzu, Utah from November through February 1866. For gallant service in the Campaign of 1864, in Shenandoah,
Virginia he was promoted to Brevet Captain on March 13, 1865, and then Major of the US Volunteers "for gallant and meritorious service." In March 1866, he received a dishonorable discharge from the Army for failure to obey orders.
While en route to his regiment in Utah, he received orders to take charge of the enlisted men there and return to Detroit. He failed to do this and was mustered out at Ft. Leavenworth in the Kansas Territory on March 19, 1866. It is quite possible that his discharge saved him from being with General Custer on the day of Battle of Little Big Horn. He was later honorably discharged on April 11, 1866.
He married July 2, 1867 Margaret Smith (born 1849), the daughter of E. O. Smith. They had a son Willard Smith Norvell, born March 13, 1863, Emily Walker Norvell, (born ca. 1871) who married in 1899 Dr. Edward Oliver Belt and had Norvell Belt, and son Bayard B. Norvell (born May 1871). Bayard served time in Joliet prison around 1900.
Edwin died in Cleveland from head injuries.
