William Smith was born Robert Croot at Cattiscombe Cottage, near Howton, outside of Mortonhampstead, Devon, England. It is not known why he changed his name but a letter from one of his descendents said he had "good and sufficient reasons." Perhaps he disliked his father who was also Robert Croot.

He was the eldest son of Robert Croot and Susanna Pethybridge Croot.

He arrived in the US between the 1851 UK Census and 1857. He became a US citizen in 1861. Eventually he was joined in the US by his widowed mother and all but one of his siblings. All but one brother used the name Croot--George Croot alternated between Croot and Smith.

In 1868 he sponsored his brothers Samuel and George for citizenship.

For many years he lived at various addresses on Roosevelt St. (now gone) in lower Manhattan near the Manhattan Bridge and the current Alfred E. Smith Houses. The picture at the left is Roosevelt St. in the 1890s. He was a grocer at the time of the 1880 Census and in other records.

He married Mary Byrns (1838-1910) about 1857 in New York. She was an Irish immigrant.

Their children were:

* William Robert 1858-1928
* Samuel 1861-1932
* Susan Connery 1864-1926
* Joseph 1868-1949
* Julia 1869-1873
* Mary Collins 1872-1947
* Edward 1878-1929

His death certificate shows that he lived at 45 Oak St. which, like Roosevelt St., is now gone. Oak St. and Roosevelt St. crossed each other so it was the same neighborhood. There are pictures of some of his grandchildren marked "on Oak St." His job was "truckster." His parents were listed as Robert and Susan Smith.

His burial location was listed as Calvary.
