The son of English-born John Mesheck Grover and his wife Rhoda McKinley, James came to Massachusetts in 1851 via Fall River with his first wife Sarah Richardson and their baby Charles Shreve Grover. Sarah died 17 Apr 1868, and he married Ann Mary Brown 10 Dec of the same year. He founded the J. J. Grover Shoe Company, whose slogan was "Soft Shoes for Tender Feet."
