Mary Croot was baptized 25 August 1839 in Mortonhampstead, Devon. She was the daughter of Robert Croot, a husbandman, and Susanna Pethybridge. She was the only one of her siblings who did not immigrate to the US.

She is in the 1841 Census with her parents at Howton, outside of Moretonhampstead, and is in the 1851 Census as a servant at Howton Farm, near her parents' home, likely the cottage now called Middle Howton.

She married William Baskevill (various spellings including Baskerville) on 5 Nov 1861 in Moretonhampstead and moved to Harberton, Devon. They lived in Mill Hill Cottage. He was born in Harberton in 1838 and was the son of John and Mary Baskevill.

They are in the 1871 Census at Harberton and had lived there for at least the first ten years of their marriage. He was listed as an "edge tool grinder."

They moved to Torquay (Tormohun) some time between 1871 and 1878 when husband William is found in a city directory. He is listed as living at Tor Square. Later he is listed as living at 22 South St. He was a "cab-proprietor." They have not been found in the 1881 Census.

According to her death certificate, they were living at 21 South St., Torquay at the time of her death. She was buried at Torquay Cemetery.

Her husband remarried in 1884 to Mary Ann Sims in Cockington. He was in the city directory in Torquay in 1893 and was still a "cab-proprietor." He and his second wife are in the 1891 and 1901 Censuses. He died in 1924 and was also buried at Torquay Cemetery.

Her children were:

* Mary Elizabeth Baskevill 1862-1940--She seems to have been a servant in London at Eaton Square in 1881 and a housekeeper in Guildford, Surrey in 1911. She died in Totnes.

* Susan Ann Baskevill 1865-1871

* William Baskevill born and died 1869

* Ruth Nuland/Newland Baskevill 1870-1937--She seems to have been a servant in Wolborough, Devon in 1891 and married Ezra Alan Jonas (1870-1946) in 1892. They lived in Paighton. She had at least one daughter Gertrude Mary Jonas 1893-1959 who married Francis Badcott in 1915. Their descendants are the only members of this branch of the Croot family remaining in England.
