She married Leroy Thomas Kanapaux on Feb. 10, 1934 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Charleston was covered in ice that day. Only family attended the wedding. They resided in Charleston until 1943 when they moved to Brooklyn,New York for Leroy's work in the shipping industry.They moved to Portsmouth, VA. in 1947 and returned to Brooklyn in 1950. She was very involved in church and civic activities while in Brooklyn. The family were members of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. They purchased a summer home in Indian Lake, Denville, NJ in 1947, which they remodeled & winterized, moving there full time in 1975. She belonged to St. Ceclia's Senior Citizens Club in Rockaway, NJ.
Gerry died at St. Clare's Hospital, visitation was held at Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave.,Rockaway, NJ. (Owned by her son, Robert) and then was brought to Charleston as per her request, where visitation was held at McAlister Funeral Home. A funeral mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Church by Fr. Charles Rowland, a nephew. Final Commendation and Farewell was at Holy Cross Cemetery on March 25th, a warm beautiful day, with flowers blooming. She would have been pleased, spring was her favorite time of year.
Gerry was survived by her husband, Leroy T., two sons, LeRoy G. & Robert E. and his wife, Linda and one daughter Yvonne M.and her husband David Garrison, two sisters Marie Cordray and Mary Campbell, three grandchildren, Carrie-Anne, Marc Thomas and Melissa Anne and another due shortly.
