Sarah was the daughter of John G. THOMAS (a shoemaker) and Christina KELCH. In 1850, Sarah was in Perrysville, Vermillion County, Indiana, with her parents, two younger siblings, and her mother's brother. In 1854, her mother died.

Sarah was married several times: to Mr. MANLEY, to Andrew Jackson HUGHES, to Aaron LANE, to a man known as Thomas DOYLE, and to Samuel MACK. In 1910, she reported that she had birthed eight children and that three were still living. She had at least two children by husband Andrew Jackson HUGHES: Freeman Levi Hughes, and Sara Jane Hughes.

The best assumption is that her other children were born in her marriage to Mr. MANLEY; names are not known.

Records cause confusion about her maiden name. Her son Freeman HUGHES gave incorrect information for her death certificate, and her maiden name was reported incorrectly on the death records of both her son Freeman and her daughter Sara. It appears that as the years passed, people came to remember her first married name (Manley) as her maiden name.
