Jack Amason passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the age of 79. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Southeast Georgia Hospital in Brunswick.
Jack was loved by many and he will be sorely missed. He is survived by wife, Vivian, of Valona, GA, son Lee (Tia), of Kennesaw, GA, son Allen (Cricket), of Statesboro, GA, son Andy (Carole) of Valona, GA, son Matthew (Erica), of Richmond Hill, GA, daughter, Bitsy (Kurt), of Denver CO, and son Greg Hawthorne (Deborah), of St. Simons Island. He is also survived by a brother, Wolcott (Anne), of Atlanta, GA, and a sister Caroline, of Savannah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Shirley Amason, by his brother, Guy Amason, and by a grandson, Del Rey Hough.
A long time resident of McIntosh County, he graduated from Glynn Academy in 1955 and "got out of "Georgia Tech in 1959, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked with several prominent engineering companies before returning to coastal Georgia, where he built his own business, Sea Gardens Seafoods. He earned respect as a businessman and left a lasting and positive impression, through his hard work, his integrity and his unflinching desire to glorify God in every pursuit.
Jack was charitable, with his time and his treasure. He invested in others and in causes that served the needs of his profession and community. He was on the boards of the National Blue Crab Industry Association, the Southeastern Fisheries Association, the Georgia Shrimp Association, the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council, the South Atlantic Fisheries Development Foundation, the Georgia DNR Commercial Fisheries Advisory Board, Navy League of the United States, and Habitat for Humanity in McIntosh County. He was a charter member of Christian Renewal Ministries and attended First Baptist Church of Darien. He had traveled around the world, visiting such exotic and far away places as Jerusalem, Rome, Oxford, Edinburg, and Moscow. But one of his greatest honors was being elected to serve as Grand Marshall for the Darien Blessing of Fleet, in 2014.
More than all of this though, his greatest joy was his family. He would often say, "I've got 6 kids, 13 grandkids, and 1 great grandson, and there's not a bad one in the bunch." He loved his family and he poured into them, unselfishly. So, his absence will leave a great void in the hearts and lives of those he leaves behind. Yet, those who knew him are better for it. He ran the good race, and he did so with dedication, dignity and love. And so, it is with much sadness and with great respect that we note his passing and we honor his life.
A memorial service to honor Jack's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 20, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Darien Georgia. Reverend Jack Peeler and Reverend Bill Ligon will officiate the Service. A reception will follow the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.
