Dr Daniel J Donovan came to the United States in 1850, crossing over in the old Black Ball packet Star of the West. For fifty years he was actively engaged in the marine merchandise business. During the civil war Donovan served in Co F, First Artillery New York State Militiaand was for forty years a member of the Tammany Society.

He was an enthusiastic Irish scholar, speaking and writing Irish and for years was an active member of the Red Hand Circle of the Fenian Brotherhood.
