Jon was from town of Vinland, Wisconsin. He attended Lakeview Elementary School and Shattuck Middle School. As a seventh-grader, he placed first among hundreds of fellow students in Math testing for the Neenah School District. Jon graduated in 1999 from St. Mary Central High School in Menasha, Wisconsin. In school he was an honor student and had lettered for the football and tennis teams. He played the guitar and piano and was extremely well read. This enabled him to carry on a conversation with just about anyone. Jon was known for his dry sense of humor and he got along with everyone and was very respectable of everyone. He also enjoyed skiing, hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley and The University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, where he was on the Dean's List. Jon decided he needed a break from school. In June of 2005, with only six credits needed before he could graduate, he left school and joined the United States Army. It was in the Army he found his niche, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas. Jon was killed along with two fellow soldiers when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle during convoy operations. He is survived by his parents, Jon and Kay St. John, a sister, Sonja; maternal grandparents, Hugo and Margaret DeJong Medford; paternal grandparents, Harold and Alice Bailey; an uncle, Duane DeJong; and his aunts, Anda, Lydia and Sue.

He was posthumously promoted from private first class to Specialist.
