Allen Davis Jr. or "Big Al" as he was known to his freinds, was born the 4th child of 11 children born to the late Allen Davis Sr. and Mary Emily Meadows-Davis on October 31, 1936. He was my uncle on my mother's side.
Uncle Allen was a very kind, jovial and simple man.
He was a real character!...He had nothing to do with big city ways!..He had the spirit of a pioneer in the old unsettled america about him.
He loved to hunt, fish, farm, and brew his own brand of liquor which was called "home brew", which he fermented from fruit peelings, sugar, yeast, and an array of other "grungy" things! He also made his own wine from peaches, grapes, figs and assorted berries.
All of this was reputed to be quite potent by the locals and I remember he would put it in mason jars and bury it in crates underground, where it would age for months!
He also inherited from my grandfather the "healing gift" as they called it...he could go out to the woods and tell you every berry, root, bark, leaf, flower, etc. that could cure this or that ailment, and yes, it really worked!
My grandfather was 1/2 Cherokee indian, so he possesed this quality too, which he inherited from his birth parents, who were both full (His father) and 3/4ths (his mother) cherokee indian. They were also endowed with great intuitive powers as well, and could read people very well.
My uncle preferred to live in the outskirts of Spartanburg in Reidville, on his huge rural spread where he raised his 12 children along with his late wife Lizzie Mae Tate, maintained a huge vegetable garden and raised his chickens, cows, hogs, geese, turkeys and two horses. We used to call him "Noah" when we were kids as a term of endearment. He was strong and silent, but very loving and quick with humor that could be quaint and sometimes a bit raunchy. After the death of his wife in the late 80's and all of his children had grown up and moved on, he continued to live on his land, but would ocassionally come into Spartanburg proper to do handy work for one of my aunts or for my aging grandfather. He was with my grandfather, holding his hand, when he passed away on October 14th, 1994.
He soon followed my grandfather in death almost 4 yrs later on September 28th, 1998 at the age of 62.
He died of a massive coronary.
I will always remember him fondly.
Rest In Peace Uncle Allen!---Love, Reesy
